Hockey NZ Trainer Programme Underway

February 1, 2022

The Hockey NZ Trainers Programme has commenced. Find out whats been happening following the first online and residential workshops.

The Hockey NZ Trainers Programme held its first session online in December 2021 and has since followed up with a residential workshop last month in Rotorua.

Programme Overview

The Trainers Programme targets community leaders from across the country who support the growth of Developers and the wider hockey system. The programme is designed to enhance individuals’ capability to drive local coach development and capture their input to support Hockey NZ in building the national coaching system.

Online and Residential Workshops

The online workshop allowed an opportunity for the group to meet virtually, get an understanding of the programme, and prepare for the residential. This created a great platform for the residential workshop allowing Trainers and Hockey NZ leads to meet in person to connect, share, and learn.

The three-day residential workshop focused on:

  • Growing leadership skills to support Trainers in their local environments
  • Understanding of systems and structures
  • Feedback opportunity for Hockey NZ on the wider coaching system

The Hockey NZ leads were supported by Coaching Leader Pat Barwick, and guest facilitator Dave Clarke from Limitless Sport Leadership and Coaching.

The design of the workshop provided a combination of information, application, and feedback. In addition to information from Hockey NZ leads, Dave Clarke provided valuable insights into the understanding of sporting systems and structures, and connecting this to hockey, both locally and nationally. Trainers were then able to take this information and start to understand how this applies to their local environment and their current work. Trainers were also able to provide valuable feedback to the Hockey NZ around the connection of the local and national coaching systems as well as the Community Coaching Plan.

A key benefit of the residential workshop was the opportunity to have community leaders across the country connect. The diversity of the group was evident as the depth of knowledge, experience, and skills were utilised to support one another and grow individual and collective capability.

Coming up Next

Looking forward, the group will engage in online meetings and a second residential workshop later in the year. Between these structured sessions, Trainers will have the opportunity to work with a mentor to support their on-going development and application of their learning to their current work environment.

Hockey NZ would like to acknowledge the Trainers for their strong engagement in the programme, Pat Barwick for her on-going support, guest facilitator Dave Clarke, and the support of our associations and wider sporting community to be able to bring this group together.
