NATIONALLY ALIGNED COACH

DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

National Approach to Coach Development

The development of coaches is a key part of bringing the National Coaching Direction to life. Hockey New Zealand encourages coaches to learn and grow their coaching capability through a combination of self-directed, collaborative, and more formal development opportunities. This approach recognises that coaches learn best in different ways and at different times, depending on who they are coaching and what they want to achieve.

Click on the information below for an overview of the difference between the development approaches.

National Coaching Ticket

This National Online Coaching Course is essentially your Warrant of Fitness for Coaching. It is FREE and a MUST have for all coaches.

The Coaching Ticket covers the essential information coaches need to understand how to conduct their role for the safety of their players and themselves and provides information about current resources.

All Coaches are encouraged to have a current Coaching Ticket.

Self directed learning and development is led by the coach and includes setting personal learning goals, seeking out relevant knowledge/resources, and reflecting on coaching experiences to guide improvement.

Collaborative learning and development happens through learning with others, such as observing coaches, sharing ideas, having coaching conversations, or working alongside a Coach Developer.

Formal learning and development includes nationally aligned opportunities, such as online modules or in-person workshops. These follow a shared framework and are designed to be practical and supportive, with learning recognised and recorded.

Nationally Aligned Formal Coach Development Opportunities

Across Aotearoa, Hockey New Zealand works with Associations, Franchises, and at times other sporting organisations to deliver nationally aligned formal coach development opportunities, including online modules, in person workshops, and FIH courses. Rather than following a single pathway, coaches are encouraged to choose learning that best fits their current context, experience, and aspirations, and to combine different types of learning to support their ongoing development.

The below outlines the formal nationally aligned development opportunities offered to each layer of player coach.

Note, the coaching layers are not intended to be boundaries between different coaching groups, or to determine eligibility for different development opportunities. This is a guide to help coaches find the most appropriate development for them in relation to their coaching context.
