A curiosity for learning drives Juliet Dunlop-Fraser

Community Coaching leader Juliet Dunlop-Fraser has a diverse coaching background. Enjoy hearing about her cross code journey and her philosophy and passion for coaching.

Sport is a powerful vehicle to provide enjoyment, connection and development for people from all backgrounds, ages, and abilities. The key ingredient to the strength of sport is the people, our community leaders.

Our profile articles are an opportunity to celebrate our incredible community leaders by sharing their story and inspiring our future leaders of our game.

We are excited to start our profiles with Community Leader, Juliet Dunlop-Fraser.

Juliet is a Community Hockey leader from the beautiful Katikati in the Bay of Plenty. Finding time in her busy schedule as a coach, player, mentor, parent and sports coordinator isn’t easy, but we managed to steal a few minutes of her time.

Born in Tauranga, Juliet has enjoyed a diverse experience in sport, having played rugby, athletics, cricket, volleyball and hockey. Her first experience of coaching was at school, but it wasn’t until she had children that she returned to coaching. Initially involved in coaching athletics and rugby, Juliet eventually added hockey to her experience bank. It only took a few years for hockey coaching to take the lead in Juliet’s coaching journey.

There are some consistent themes when you look at great coaches, and two themes that were particularly evident when meeting Juliet were her passion for developing people and a curiosity for learning as an individual and coach.

When asked what her coaching philosophies were, Juliet said her “over-arching philosophy is to develop a positive team culture, where enjoyment of the game is paramount and where all players feel valued and supported.

My objectives when I coach are always to continue to grow and learn, make progress in the development of athletes, individually and as a team, and finally to play my part in imparting a life-long love of hockey”.

Juliet has a clear purpose to provide a positive experience for all her players, to provide an opportunity for them to grow and learn; and for her to give back to the sport she loves.

Over the past few years Juliet has been coaching the Katikati College First XI boys and intermediate teams, involved in Tauranga age group representative teams, as well as mentoring new umpires. In addition to her role as a coach of players, she has also started to move into the Developer space, receiving an invitation to attend the Hockey New Zealand Developer workshop in 2019. The Developer space focuses on identifying and supporting people with the potential to lead the coaching of coaches.

A critical part of Juliet’s positive impact as a coach is her interest and passion to learn. Leading by example, Juliet constantly pushes herself out of her comfort zone to challenge and develop. A prime example of this was just last year, where Juliet took the learning from the Hockey NZ Developer workshop and co-delivered an FIH Level One Coaching Course in Christchurch, facilitating a valuable learning opportunity for community coaches.

Tauranga Hockey also sing Juliet’s praises. Tauranga Hockey’s CoachForce and Participation Officer Emma Phelps commented, "Juliet continues to grow as a coach in our community. Her dedication, give-it-a-go attitude, and willingness to learn has helped Juliet to develop her own philosophy and become a confident coach. Her passion for the game is evident in everything she is involved with as she creates such an enjoyable experience for all involved".

In reflecting on her coaching, Juliet’s biggest take-away has been “that you get back more than you give”. This was evident when she shared her proudest moment, “coaching a bunch of boys from a small, rural school through to playing in Midlands, picking up two titles and then going on tour. Watching them grow up and into their game and loving it”. But ultimately Juliet enjoys proud moments every game, “just the little things give me enormous pride”.

As always there are a few perks with coaching, and the funniest moment in her coaching comes from watching her team do their colds in the Paetahi stream (Mt Taranaki) in September.

For future coaches Juliet’s advice is to ensure you don’t think that you know it all. Give your players the opportunity to be part of their own journey, they will surprise you. And if you’re thinking about getting involved in coaching, just do it.
