The Heart of Hockey: Celebrating Our Volunteer Coaches

June 16, 2026

Hockey in Aotearoa is built on volunteers — and nowhere is that more true than in coaching.

Across the country, over 5000 people step forward every week to guide teams, support players, and help them fall in love with the game. Some are parent helpers taking their first session. Some are seasoned club coaches who’ve been giving back for decades. Many are people who never planned to coach at all, but saw a need and put their hand up.

Coaches wear more than one hat — often all in the same week

In hockey, volunteering isn’t a single role. Coaches manage, organise, umpire, drive carpools, tie shoelaces, run warm‑ups, and cheer from the sidelines. They turn up after work, on cold mornings, in the rain and the sunshine — because they care about the players in front of them.

The impact goes far beyond the hockey

Ask any player what they remember most, and it’s rarely a drill or a result. It’s the coach who believed in them. The coach who made them feel welcome. The coach who helped them try something new. The coach who made hockey fun.

Volunteer coaches shape confidence, connection, and community. They help create the kind of environment where people want to stay involved — not just for a season, but for life.

This week — and every week — we say thank you

National Volunteer Week is a chance to pause and recognise the people who make hockey happen. But the truth is, the impact of volunteer coaches is felt every single day — at trainings, on the turf, and in the lives of players across the country.

To every coach who gives their time: thank you. You keep our game moving, connected, and thriving.
