2019 Contribution to Coaching Awards announced

October 12, 2020
Congratulations to our 2019 Contribution to Coaching Award recipients, Angeline Waetford, Dave Ross, Geoff McNaughton and Sunjay Ganda!

The Hockey New Zealand Annual Awards event for the 2019 hockey season was scheduled for April this year. The Annual Awards celebrates the achievements of the 2019 calendar year and recognizes the valuable contribution of individuals and organisations to hockey.

In the case of many events this year, the Awards evening was unable to go ahead in person. This has provided a great opportunity to be innovative and welcome the first virtual awards celebration for Hockey NZ.

The Contribution to Coaching Award is the primary coaching award. This award acknowledges the contribution coaches have made across the community, performance and high performance space. It takes into consideration a coach's demonstration of leadership, continuous learning, understanding of the game, ability to build meaningful relationships and be an effect communicator. Coaches are nominated by their association.

This year Hockey NZ is excited to announce four recipients of the Contribution to Coaching Award.

  • Angeline Waetford – Northland Hockey
  • Dave Ross - Otago Hockey
  • Geoff McNaughton - North Harbour Hockey
  • Sunjay Ganda - Canterbury Hockey

Hockey New Zealand would like to congratulate the recipients of the award and acknowledge all the nominees and the great work our coaching community do nationwide to support the growth and development of our people and our game.

Please enjoy hearing more about the 2019 Contribution to Coaching recipients.

Angeline Waetford coached 3 teams within the Northland Hockey Association across a variety of levels and provided support at New Zealand U18 Hockey Camps in 2019.

Angeline was the Head Coach of the Northland National Hockey League team that silver for a third time and the Head Coach of Springfield Premier Women who won the Round Robin and Grand Final Trophy.

In addition to her NHL and Club commitments, Angeline also managed to find time to step in and coach the Northland U18 Women’s Development team after they had no coach to take the team. In taking on this role, Angeline enabled a group of players the opportunity to represent their region.

We congratulate Angeline on receiving this award in recognition of her work in the coaching space.

Dave Ross
has had a significant impact on the development of generations of players in the Otago region.

In 2019 Dave was the Head Coach of Kings High School winning the schools first ever Rankin Cup. Dave also coached the U21 Southern Men, securing a bronze medal at the National Championships.

Dave is referred to in the community by those that he coaches as the “Oracle”, a highly respected hockey coach who has given an incredible amount of time and effort over a large number of years.

Congratulations to Dave on a great 2019 season and thank you for your on-going support of our game and players in the Otago region.

Geoff McNaughton has been coaching at Westlake Girls for eight years, continuing to coach at the school after his children graduated.

Geoff has a strong belief in building a positive team culture, and instilling belief and confidence in his players. He is committed to learning and is a regular attendee at coach development opportunities.

In 2019 Geoff stepped into the role of assistant coach of the North Harbour Collier team. Working with a younger age group, Geoff adapted his coaching, and utilized his humour to support a successful experience for the team.

Congratulations and thank you Geoff for your contribution to coaching, and a great 2019 season.

Sunjay Ganda is heavily engaged in the Canterbury hockey community, coaching club, school and association spaces as well as supporting coach development as a mentor.

In 2019 Sunjay guided the Canterbury Beavers to a National Senior title and was a selector for the Canterbury NHL Men and Women’s sides. Sunjay was also the head coach of St Margaret’s finishing 3rd at Federation Cup.

As a mentor, Sunjay supports the development of community coaches and has been instrumental in implementing a coach mentoring programme at St Margaret’s working with secondary school-aged kids that are coaching school teams.

Sunjays ability to relate to players and read situations during a game is a strength and his knowledge is an invaluable asset to Canterbury Hockey. Congratulations Sunjay on a great 2019 season and receiving this award.
