BASELINE ATTACK/DEFENSE
Attacking and defending in the defensive third and baseline

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Approx. 5-12 Players and 1 GK
- Cones to mark the space
- 1 set of Bibs
- Approx. 1/3 of turf including goal and circle area

HOW IT WORKS:

Depending upon your numbers and space, this activity can be completed by alternating activities, or completing one activity before shifting to the next. If alternating be aware of protecting and developing your GK.

A) Activity starts with Player A1 passing to Player D1 who passes the ball back to A1. A1 then passes the ball to Player A2, to initiate a 1 on 1 contest to goal between D1 and A2. D1 is trying to force a turnover and make a pass through the release gate. A2 is trying to score a goal or if they turn over the ball, prevent D1 from passing through the release gate.

B) Activity starts with A1 passing the ball to D1 who passes the ball back to A1. A1 then passes to A2 to initiative a 2 on 2 contest. As soon as A1 makes the pass to A2, Player D2 can join the activity. A1 and A2 are trying to score a goal and D1 and D2 are trying to force a turn over and make a pass through the release gates. However, A1 can only receive a pass inside the circle.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Individual defence, footwork and body position to limit space and shooting angles and options
- Defenders managing baseline space and circle defence, protecting feet and avoiding fouls
- Attackers movement on and off the ball to create passing options
- Attackers identifying opportunities for 1 on 1 and 2 on 1s
- GK and defenders communication

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Complete activities on opposite sides of the field to experience left and right side defence and attack
- Modify Activity A to have A1 as an outlet pass for D1 to pass to, if A1 receives the ball they join D1 on attack and A2 transitions onto defence
- Modify Activity B to have A2 NOT join, to make a 1 v 2, replicating a recovering defender
- Coach calls out 1v1 or 2v2 as A1 passes to D1 and players must adjust
