Receiving back to play on the move to roll out and play forward
WHAT YOU NEED:
-Approx groups of 6-8 players - Cones to mark out areas - Approx 10m x 25m area
HOW IT WORKS:
In groups of 6-8, set up as per the diagram in a relay type structure.
The activity starts with Player A passing the ball to Player B who starts inside or behind the cones to then make a sharp lead back towards the ball. B receives on the move and carries back and around the outside of the markers before straightening up and making a pass to Player C. Replicating a receive with a defender on their back.
Player B follows their pass and joins the line behind Player E. Player A follows their pass into the middle and waits their turn after D has made their lead. The activity is repeated with D leading back towards the ball to receive a pass from C. D receives on the move rolls out and passes to Player F and the pattern continues.
The activity is continuous, and the ball should continue moving as players rotate in and out of the middle role. Consider switching the players arcing direction, this may be challenging as it is on their reverse. The passing pattern remains the same, encourage players to explore staying on their forehand and also using their reverse to arc.
WHAT TO FOCUS ON:
- Timing of lead to connect with the passer - Timing, speed, and accuracy of the pass - Receiving on the move, and carrying on an arc to create space to make a pass - Ball protection, receiving inside body frame to avoid the defender stealing the ball - Passing at speed with vision and control
WAYS TO ADAPT:
- Players randomly choose to roll left or right - Change dimensions to promote sharper or wider arcs - Complete 2-3 minute efforts with 30 seconds rest to create skill conditioning activity - Add a defender to mark the player in the box, consider them being passive to start - Encourage freedom for the player receiving to include a jink, one handed grip, exploration of options
