Changing the point of attack to create and utilise space
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Approx 12 players, optional 2-4 GKs - Cones to mark the space and goals (or use mini goals) - 1 set of Bibs - Approx 25m x 25m area
HOW IT WORKS:
Split your group into two teams, ideally 6 players on each. Set up a 25m-by-25m box with 4 mini goals around the outside as per the diagram.
Have four players from each team start inside the box. Teams then place their two remaining players on the outside of the box, one on each of the sides where their goals are. These players can move anywhere up and down the side line but not enter the field of play and cannot be tackled.
The ball starts inside the box and teams try to score in one of their two goals. If a team scores a goal, they keep possession and can only score in the opposite goal. Once the ball is turned over, teams can then score in either of their goals.
Teams can use their players on the outside to bounce the ball in and out.
Consider running the activity for a set amount time such as 2-3minutes followed by a 30-45 second rest and repeat.
WHAT TO FOCUS ON:
- Creating and utilising space - Creating passing options through movement and vision - Using players on the outside to change point of attack - Managing pressure, receiving with vision to pass or carry with purpose
WAYS TO ADAPT:
- Rotate players on the outside every minute OR allow teams to change during play ensuring there is always 2 players on the outside - Change size of the area and positioning of goals - Designate a player or players to only have 2-3 touches - Attack power play, allow a player on the outside to join the attacking team, defending team can respond and have one player from the outside join. Reset after a goal is scored.
