TRIPARTITE POSSESSION GAME
Ball protection and possession on transition

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Approx 9 Players
- Cones to mark the area
- 2 sets of Bibs
- Approx 25m x 25m area

HOW IT WORKS:

Break the group into three teams of three: Yellow, Red and Blue. Start with Yellow and Red on the same team holding possession of the ball inside the area and Blue team defending, making it a 6 vs 3.

When the Blue team wins possession, the team who lost the ball becomes the defending team. For example if a Red player lost possession, the Red team would defend and the Blue team would join the Yellow team as the team of 6 holding possession and continue the 6 vs 3.

Consider having a time frame for the possession game, for instance 1-2 minutes with a 30-60 second rest. If a team remains in defence, at the end of the 1-2 minutes, you may need to switch another team into defence.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Transition between attack and defence and identifying teammates
- Movement with and without the ball to create passing options
- Vision to identify passing options and space
- Defending as a team to close down space and force turnovers

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Limit touches to 1-3 for the attacking team or individual players
- Increase the space to give players more time and space to find passes and possess the ball
- Set a target for number of passes and automatically switch defence once reached
- Allocate points to teams for reaching a set number of passes to determine a winner at the end
- More players may be used by adapting the team numbers or having a designated player always on attack or defence
