POST RELAYS
Passing and receiving with a focus on post up leads

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Groups of 5-7 players
- Approx 25m by 3m space

HOW IT WORKS:

Set up a relay approx. 25 yards long, ideally using the backline and 25 yard line or 25 yard line and half way line. Start one player in the middle and have half the group on either line as per diagram.

The ball starts on the outside by a player carrying the ball towards the middle player for approx. 2metres before making a push pass on the move to the middle player who has made a short lead forward (posting up). The player who has made the pass runs through to receive the ball from the middle player. The middle player must time the pass to allow the player to receive on the move and make a pass to the next player in line. The middle player remains in the middle and the player who made the pass joins the back of the line.

The pattern is then repeated until all players are back where they started. Give players a short rest and switch a new player into the middle.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Receiving out in front, stick on the ball, and on the move, to enable speed and vision
- Push pass on the move with the ball out in front, body weight going forward
- Timing the post up lead to be short sharp, and cueing in with the passer
- Timing of the pass to keep the ball moving as fast as possible with control

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Challenge players to change the middle player while the activity is going
- Simplify by having the player running through, always running to the left of the middle player, then change and have them run to the right
- Challenge players to run either left or right of the middle player
- Set a time or count the number of completions for groups to try and improve and race one another
