SWITCH GAME
Understanding how to manage attack and defence transitions

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 12-16 Players and a Goalkeeper
- 1 set of Bibs
- Cones
- Space approx half a field

HOW IT WORKS:

Split the group into two teams, for example 6v6 or 8v8, and set up a half a field with a switch zone coned off in the bottom right hand corner, a no go zone in the centre of the field, and the goal in the top left corner, as per the diagram.

Apply typical game rules and have one team attacking and one team defending. The attacking team is trying to score a goal. The defending team is trying to stop the attacking team from scoring.

If the defending team get the ball they must get the ball to one of their teammates in the switch zone. Once the ball is in this zone, the defending team changes and attacks towards the goal and the attacking team defends.

If the attacking team lose the ball but regain it before the opposition get the ball into the switch zone they continue to attack.

No team is allowed to pass or carry the ball through the no go zone. Players can run through this zone without the ball.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Identify and utilise space to change the angle of attack or outlet
- Anticipation, quick reaction on transition
- Protect the middle and slow down the ball
- Creating turnovers to secure the ball

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Change the switch zone to the opposite bottom corner
- Simplify by having a switch zone on the left and right bottom corners for the defending team to use
- To challenge individuals or the entire group limit touches to three
- Allow the teams to take turns in changing the size and location of the no go zone
