PRESSURE BOX
Defending as a team and moving the ball against variable pressure

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Groups 8-12 players
- 1 Sets of Bibs
- 5 Cones or flat Markers per group
- Space approximately 10m by 15m

HOW IT WORKS:

For each box, break into two teams of 4-6 players. Each team takes turns as the defending and possession team. For smaller groups consider making the space smaller, and vice versa for larger groups.

The possession team want to move around the ball inside the box for as long as possible without the defensive team getting the ball.

The defensive team start with one player in the box trying to get the ball. Every, approximately 10 seconds OR 5 passes, the coach will call in another defender. This will continue until the defending team has forced a turnover and have the ball.

On the turnover teams swap roles. The possession team remains in possession if there is a free hit or the ball goes out of bounds off the defence. The clock is stopped until the play restarts.

The winner at the end of the session being the team that keeps possession for the longest time. If an attacking group gets to 4v4 then the clock continues to run until they lose possession.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Defensive lines and positioning, working as a team to apply pressure and create a turnover
- Receiving and passing on the move with the ball on the stick and out in front to assist vision
- Awareness of space to lead, carry, or pass into
- Off the ball movement to create space or be a passing option

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Change the amount of time between extra defenders joining in for example every 15 seconds
- Change the size and shape of the playing area
- Challenge an individual or the group to play 3 touch hockey
- To simplify for attackers, only allow defenders to intercept, no tackling or make the space larger
