MUSICAL CHAIRS: DEFENSIVE ORGANISATION
Defensive organisation on transition using a free man

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Approx 10 Players and Goalkeeper
- 2 Sets of bibs
- Optional flat tab markers
- Space is a third of a field space

HOW IT WORKS:

Identify 2 players to interchange as the designated defender, and break the rest of the group into two teams A and B.

The activity starts with A1 and B1 making short sharp passes between each other, and on the whistle or signal from the coach the player with the ball becomes the attacking team. This triggers the game to begin with the defensive team looking to quickly organise and the attacking team looks to go forward as quickly as they can. Play normal game rules allowing play to stop and start.

The designated defender X1 will immediately join whichever team becomes the defensive team. As the activity progresses move the X1 defender to start in a different position as per X2 in the diagram. The resting designated defender can act as a outlet pass if the defending team get the ball.

The rest of players on team A and B players randomly position themselves on the 6 available starting tabs or you can identify spaces such as the edge of the circle, backline in place of flat tabs. This will create variety of situations for teams to adjust from.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Understanding how to identify and use an extra defender, covering dangerous space quickly
- Individual defensive responsibility, covering players or space, pressure on the ball, and communicating to others
- Goalkeepers identifying who their team is and supporting the communication of defensive structure, and preparing for any shots
- Attackers create space and move the ball quickly before the defence can set

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- For more or less players, adjust the team sizes and consider changing the size of the area
- Have additional balls ready to continue to game for infringements or the ball goes out etc
- Set up an opportunity for the defending team to transition onto attack, such as half court basketball or a coned off zone. Attackers would then transition onto defence
