OVERLOAD POSSESSION BOX
Working together to keep possession when under pressure

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Groups of 4 players
- 2-3 Bibs
- 1 Ball per group
- 4 Cones or flat markers per group
- Space approximately 10m by 10m for each group

HOW IT WORKS:

Break into groups of 4 players. Have one player start as a defender and the other three as the possession team.

The possession team are looking to shift the ball inside the box and keep it away from the defender for as long as possible. The defender is trying to force the turnover or disrupt the ball movement as quickly as possible. Players can move anywhere within the box, can carry the ball and pass.

If the defender gets the ball, they switch places with a player on the possession team and the 3v1 continues.

Consider placing a time limit on the activity, for example 2-3 minutes and 30 seconds rest, making sure everyone is getting a turn at defending.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Defender's line to create a turnover, for instance pushing them into the corner or to the defender's forehand
- Defender identifying opportunities to apply pressure, receiving and passing errors, taking away vision
- Receiving and passing on the move with speed and vision, footwork and posture key
- Awareness of space to lead, carry, or pass into
- Off the ball movement to support

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- To reduce the challenge, start without defenders, or with defenders only able to intercept not tackle. The engagement grid may be a good pre-activity
- Adjust the size of the area, a bigger space will be easier for attackers, a smaller space easier for defenders
- Change the shape and allow players to explore the different angles and movements for defenders and the possession team
- Set possession passing or time targets for example 10 passes or 20 seconds
- Create an aim for defenders, if they get the ball to escape outside the box with the ball controlled
