MIDFIELD MOVEMENT BOX
Working together to break through or protect midfield space

WHAT YOU NEED:

- Groups of 6 players
- 2 Sets of bibs
- 4 Cones per group
- 12m by 8m rectangle

HOW IT WORKS:

Set up a 12x8m rectangle using 4 cones for each group of 6 players.

There is a 2 v 2 game inside the box (A1/A2 vs D1/D2), the A’s are looking to support the ball moving from F1 to F2 and back from F2 to F1. D1 and D2 are looking to stop the ball moving directly between F1 and F2 as well as trying to stop A1 and A2 from helping move the ball between F1 and F2.

F1 / F2 can move and carry laterally along the boundary but can’t move into the playing area. A1 and A2 can carry and pass the ball, D1 and D2 can tackle and intercept in the box.

Allow rest time, such as 2minutes on 30 seconds off and/or switch around teams after a specific time frame (2-3mins) OR when an intercept or number of successful passes between F1 and F2 is made.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Defending direct passes whilst managing A1 and A2
- Communicating defensive lines, pressure, and intercepts
- Off ball movement to create passing channels for others
- Playing with and off other teammates
- Team strategy and problem solving

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Change size and dimensions of area, more space will make it hard for the 2 defending
- Designate players or all to have limited touches (1-3) and promote focus on first touch, footwork, passing
- Count number of times the ball travels between F1 and F2
- If you have extra players, you can have 2 players resting and rotate the teams of two through As, Fs and D's
- GK's may be part of the F team, to work on their footwork and kicking
