Junior Hockey - Seriously Fun!

April 16, 2026

How adults can shape junior hockey environments for kids to learn, belong, and grow, and have some serious fun!

Junior hockey is a place where kids feel excited to turn up.

Where they feel safe to try, free to learn, and connected to the people around them.

Where the game sparks confidence, friendships, and growth.

A Seriously Fun junior hockey environment is one where:

  • Confidence grows because kids feel safe to try
  • Friendships flourish because everyone feels they belong
  • Learning thrives because effort matters more than outcomes

When hockey feels positive and engaging, kids are more open, more focused, and more willing to learn. Fun isn’t something we add at the end — it’s what unlocks everything else.

Fun Enables Learning

Kids learn best when they enjoy the environment they’re in.

When hockey is fun:

 • Kids concentrate for longer

 • They take more risks in their learning

 • They persist through challenges

 • They stay involved season after season

Enjoyment creates motivation. Motivation fuels practice. Practice leads to growth.

How We Create the Environment That Matters

Junior hockey environments don’t create themselves. They’re shaped every week by the adults involved — through conversations, decisions, and reactions big and small.

Parents, coaches, team managers, and administrators all contribute by:

  • What we prioritise
  • What we celebrate
  • How we respond to mistakes
  • How we talk about progress

Kids notice these signals. Over time, they learn what “matters” here.

When adults are intentional about creating a positive, supportive environment, kids feel safe to explore the game — and that’s when confidence, connection, and learning flourish.

One Shared Purpose, Many Roles (need a new heading)

Adults in junior hockey have different responsibilities, but a shared purpose.

Whether you’re:

  • On the sideline
  • On the turf
  • Organising teams and competitions

You help shape the experience.

When adults are aligned around Seriously Fun, junior hockey becomes a place where:

  • Effort is valued
  • Everyone belongs
  • Development happens naturally

That alignment makes a real difference to how kids experience the game.

What Success Looks Like in Junior Hockey

In junior hockey, success isn’t just about results.

It looks like:

• Kids who want to keep playing

• Players who feel brave enough to try

• Everyone involved, no waiting in lines

• Kids wanting to turn up next week

Support for Coaches and Parents

Creating Seriously Fun junior hockey doesn’t rely on having all the answers.

Support is available through schools, clubs, and Associations, along with the coaching resources provided by Hockey New Zealand. Tools like CoachMate, a free Hockey NZ app, are designed to help coaches and parents plan engaging, seriously fun activities, stay organised, and feel supported in their role.

The focus is on making coaching and supporting junior hockey more manageable and enjoyable, so attention can stay on creating positive experiences for young players.

Over the Next Few Weeks we’ll explore three foundations of Seriously Fun junior hockey:

  • Confidence – creating spaces where kids feel safe to try
  • Friendships – building environments where everyone belongs
  • Learning – supporting growth through enjoyment and engagement

Together, these foundations help create junior hockey experiences that are meaningful, positive, and lasting.

If kids are smiling, moving, learning, and making friends - they are having some Serious Fun.
