Passing to create space and identify opportunities to split defenders
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Groups of approx. 7 players - Cones to mark the space - 1 set of Bibs - Approx. 15 x 20m space
HOW IT WORKS:
Split into groups of 7 and designate two players to start as defenders. If you have more or less than 7, you can adjust the number of defenders and size of the area.
The team of 5 players set up in the box, start with the ball, and aim to hold possession. They can move, carry, and pass anywhere in the area. The defending players are trying to force a turnover.
If a defending player makes a turnover, including a ball going out, the defending player switches with the attacker who lost possession. If there are no turnovers, switch over the defenders after a minute or after the attacking team complete a set number of passes
WHAT TO FOCUS ON:
- Attackers receiving with vision and purpose to make the next pass or carry to space - Attackers moving with and without the ball to create passing options - Attackers making accurate strong passes - Defenders working together to close down space
WAYS TO ADAPT:
- Change size and dimensions of area - One point per pass, see what the highest points can be reached - Consider adding double points for passes that split the defenders (go between them) - Designate player or players to have 1-3 touches - Dictate type of passes for example 3D pass every 3-5 passes
