PROGRESSIVE CIRCLE TACKLE BOX
Individual and team defence and attack in the circle

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 6- 12 Players and 1 GK
- 4-5 Bibs
- Cones or flat tab markers
- Approx. quarter field with an attacking circle

HOW IT WORKS:

Start with 3-5 players as defenders and the rest attackers. Set up a channel for a 1v1 as per the diagram just outside the circle. D1 starts inside the circle and the remaining Defenders wait outside the circle ready to join as the activity progresses.

A1 passes to D1 who passes it back to A1 to initiate the activity and allow D1 to move outside the circle to defend A1. Once the 1v1 is completed A1 moves into the circle and D2 who was resting joins them.

The activity is then restarted with A2 passing to D1 who again passes back to A2 to initiate the activity. This time the 1v1 turns into a 2v2 with A1 and D2 joining. Once the 2v2 is completed, A2 moves into the circle and is joined by D3.

The activity is restarted again with A3 passing back and forth to D1 with this time the 1v1 turning into a 3v3 including A1, A2, A3 and D1, D2, and D3. Once the 3v3 is completed, A3 moves into the circle.

The final phase of the activity, starts again A4 making a pass to D1 and this time the 1v1 turns into a 4v3.

This is then repeated, with players rotating between the different defending and attacking roles.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON:

- Individual defence, using footwork, stick and body position to direct the attacker and force a turnover
- Adapting with changing numbers to connect with more players, awareness of space and movement off one another
- Tight defence in the circle to prevent or limit infringements and shots
- Defensive structure for equal players verse one player down (man on man verse zonal)
- Awareness of the role of the GK, communication, and an additional defender

WAYS TO ADAPT:

- Change if or when defenders join to create an additional player for the attackers. For example D2 may not join until A3 is part of the activity allowing a 1v1, 2v1, 3v2, 4v3
- Create an outlet area for the defending team to get to if they create a turnover
- For an infringement in the circle allow the attacker to have a penalty stroke or a one on one shoot out
